給我搖籃曲
Sing me a lullaby
Tulle, thread, candies, foil wraps, fabrics, sunlight
2021
This is an installation on the artist ‘s struggle with sleeping disorder. She co-slept with her grandmother until the age of nine. Since then, she has struggled with insomnia when she is in bed alone. As a sleep aid, she would suck hard candy until she fell asleep each night. She did not associate this habit to the sleep crutch symptom until the obsession of sucking in bedtime grows stronger. When light is out, the sound of sucking and rhythm of the hard candy against her teeth generate relief.
The main piece of the installation is a handmade domestic sized pillow from ivory tulle scraps of a tailored wedding dress. Hard translucent candies of bold shapes are hand sewn onto 12 layers of tulle. The candy-filled pillow appears soft and dreamy with sunlight passing through from the window, as if one may drift off to sleep with ease.
